Priests support Cardinal Brady Aoife Hegarty Armagh priests have resoundingly rowed in behind Cardinal Seán Brady following calls for his resignation. The cardinal is resisting calls to step down after it was revealed that, in 1975, he took part in a Church trial of paedophile priest Fr Brendan Smyth but didn't report the offences to the Gardai¨. In a sample telephone survey, The Irish Catholic contacted two-thirds of parishes (26% of priests) in the Armagh diocese, with the overwhelming majority of priests contacted expressing clear support for Cardinal Brady. Most priests said it was their desire that the Cardinal remain in office and continue his 'good work' on implementing child protection measures. www.irishcatholic.ie/site/
